Nestled along the enchantingly named Romantic Road in Bavaria, you’ll find one of the most beautiful towns in Germany. Rothenburg ob der Tauber looks like it’s been frozen in time, with its cobblestone streets, medieval walls and colourful timber-frame houses. Around every corner, you’ll discover a new, picture-perfect view and get a glimpse into the town’s rich history, which spans nearly 800 years.
It’s no surprise, then, that this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany… and yet Rothenburg has achieved the impossible and managed to keep its authenticity and historic charm largely intact. It’s a magical place to visit at any time of year and is sure to leave a lasting impression, long after you’ve left those fairytale streets behind.

Where to stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
You can explore the main sights of Rothenburg ob der Tauber in a few hours, on foot, making this an ideal day trip destination from nearby cities, such as Nuremberg or Frankfurt. However, I highly recommend staying overnight to experience a more relaxed side to Rothenburg, once the day tourists depart and the old town lights up under the cosy street lamps.
Staying within the historic city walls guarantees a magical experience and there a number of hotels and guest-houses to choose from, each with their own unique character and history. We stayed at Hotel Klosterstüble; a charming, dog-friendly hotel housed in the walls of a 16th century monastery.
Alternatively, there is a range of budget-friendly accommodation available near the train station, outside of the city walls but still within easy reach of the old town.
The best things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
The best way to experience Rothenburg ob der Tauber is to simply wander the pretty streets and explore the town at your own pace – but there are a few highlights you won’t want to miss.
Marktplatz
At the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s old town is its bustling main square – Marktplatz – where you’ll find a beautiful mix of architectural and historic gems. The main attraction is the Gothic Town Hall and its Renaissance-style tower, which provides unbeatable birds-eye views of the old town, for those willing to tackle the 220 steps! Or if heights aren’t your thing, head underground instead to the medieval dungeons preserved below the town hall.
Also located on Marktplatz, you’ll find Ratstrinkstube (or the Councilor’s Tavern) with its famous clock-face, which chimes every hour and performs a re-enactment of the legendary mayor who saved Rothenburg by agreeing to drink a tankard of wine… honestly, you can’t beat a bit of quirky Germany history!
In summer, Marktplatz provides an atmospheric backdrop for live music concerts and festivals, whilst in winter, the square fills with festive market stalls and the sweet aromas of Glühwein and hot roasted chestnuts.
Explore the Old Town
The medieval old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber has been impeccably preserved and restored, so it really does feel like you’re walking in the footsteps of history. Along every street, you’ll find colourful buildings, historic doorways, ornate fountains… you really can’t go wrong and whichever route you take, you’ll be mesmerised by the views.
The most famous photo stop is Das Plönlein (or “Little square”), which provides your typical postcard view of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. With its old clock tower and crooked yellow house, this enchanting scene looks like it’s been plucked straight out of a Disney film – in fact, it supposedly provided the inspiration for Geppetto’s home in Walt Disney’s Pinocchio.
All around this area, you’ll find dreamy side-streets and winding alleyways, lined with brightly coloured buildings. There are lots of lovely cafés and bars, too, so it’s the perfect place to take a break with an ice cream or a traditional Bavarian beer.
Herngasse is another picture-perfect street with its quintessentially German timber-frame buildings and striking 16th century fountain at the centre. In summer, the restaurants and bars spill out on to the streets, providing the most magical backdrop for wining and dining.
So much of Rothenburg’s charm is in the detail, so be sure to look up and keep your eyes peeled for the quirky clock-faces, window displays and striking architecture, as you make your way around the old town.
Visit the Castle Garden
Rothenburg’s historic castle was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1300s, however you can still explore the beautiful gardens, where the fortress once stood. Castle Garden (Burggarten) is a popular spot with both locals and tourists and is a great place to relax with a picnic or a good book, especially in the warmer months. It’s completely free to explore, open 24/7 and dog friendly (on lead only). The 18th-century flower-beds and stone statues give off an almost Mediterranean vibe, especially on a warm summer’s evening, when the roses and fresh lavender are in bloom.
Castle Garden also offers up the very best views of the Tauber Valley – a beautiful area for hiking, cycling and wine tasting, if you have more time to spend in the region.
Walk the historic city walls
The old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is encircled by medieval city walls, supposedly constructed from the stone of the original castle, which was destroyed in an earthquake. The walls extend for about 4km around the old town and are free for visitors to access, with a number of historic gates and towers to explore along the way.
The Röderturm is a good place to start your walk. During the summer months, this historic tower also houses a small exhibition about the Allied air raid of Rothenburg ob der Tauber during the Second World War (check here for opening times).
Brush up on local history in a museum
If you are spending more than a day in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, or find yourself caught out in the rain, consider visiting one of the town’s unusual museums. Head to a former medieval monastery to learn more about the town’s history in the Rothenburg Museum; immerse yourself in some seriously grisly history in the Medieval Crimes Museum, or get festive in the German Christmas Museum!
